Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has moved to restock its Hong Kong corporate practice with the hire of Paul Hastings partner Christopher Betts.

Betts joined Skadden this month after just over two years with Paul Hastings, where he was promoted to partner in September 2010.

With a focus on China-related capital markets, Betts' has worked with clients including JP Morgan, Air China and Beijing Capital Land. He has acted on flotations for companies including China Telecom and China Rongsheng Heavy Industries, and speaks fluent Mandarin.

The hire of Betts comes after the firm lost a three-partner team to the Hong Kong arm of US rival Kirkland & Ellis in August last year.

Since this point Skadden has hired Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's former Hong Kong managing partner Clive Rough, who retired from the magic circle firm's partnership in March 2010 and specialises in corporate and finance, while M&A partner John Adebiyi has relocated to Hong Kong from London. In addition US corporate partner Daniel Dusek now divides his time between New York and Beijing.

Skadden Asia corporate co-heads Nicholas Norris and Dominic Tsun quit the US giant last August to join Kirkland, alongside corporate partner Li-Chien Wong. Chicago-headquartered Kirkland significantly bulked up its Asia arm at the same time, also adding partners from Latham & Watkins and Allen & Overy.

Eric Friedman, Skadden's executive partner, "[Betts'] track record in advising major investment banks and PRC companies in large and complex transactions makes him a perfect fit for both our firm and our clients."

Betts is admitted as a lawyer in Hong Kong and New South Wales, Australia. Before joining Paul Hastings Betts co-led Asia Pacific legal team at McKinsey & Company.
