Mayer Brown is set to cut up to 20 jobs in its London office, with both lawyers and support staff affected.

The firm would not confirm the breakdown of legal and non-legal staff or the practice areas affected by the cuts. However it is understood that the City corporate and finance teams will be affected.

A restructuring of the firm's corporate partnership has already seen partner numbers shrink significantly in recent years. The overhaul followed the departure of corporate partner Paul Maher, who left the firm to set up a London office for US firm Greenberg Traurig.

A spokeswoman commented: "We continue to look carefully at our business to ensure that we have as strong a platform as possible on which to build. We have made the difficult decision that a small reduction in headcount is necessary which may result in less than 20 people from the London office leaving the firm."

She added: "This includes a small number of fee earners along with support staff. All those potentially impacted by this decision have been notified and will be provided with support and assistance at this time."

News of the redundancies at Mayer Brown came after Scots firm Maclay Murray & Spens today (4 May) confirmed that two lawyers and four support staff were at risk of redundancy in the firm's private client team. No other departments are affected.
