Dewey & LeBoeuf's Hong Kong arm is set to join DLA Piper, as lawyers from the faltering US firm's international network continue to find new homes.
The team joining DLA includes corporate partner Heng Loong Cheong, local partner Sheng Wu, and Joyce Chan, the head of Dewey's local associated firm Joyce Sze Ho Chan & Coby, as well as one of counsel and two associates.
Chan, who specialises in insurance law, previously headed up the legal teams at AXA China Region Insurance Company and New York Life Insurance Worldwide Limited in Hong Kong.
Dewey's Hong Kong office is among the last of the firm's overseas hubs to break away, with high-profile teams in Poland and Italy recently announcing their exits.
The new hires increase DLA's Hong Kong partnership to around 25, with 80 lawyers also working out of the base, offering services including banking, finance and real estate.
Bill Marcoux, head of the firm's insurance sector transactions and regulation practice, commented: "Our insurance and reinsurance capabilities are growing at a phenomenal rate. The appointments of Joyce and Heng Loong in Hong Kong, combined with the hire of Paul Chen to work across Silicon Valley and New York, will put us in an extremely strong and unique position to meet the growing demand for insurance-related transactional activity in Asia."
Dewey's Hong Kong arm has a relatively low profile in the local market, with one partner at a rival firm commenting: "I'm not sure what Dewey does over here. You would definitely have to look at the business case carefully."
The news comes shortly after DLA hired a four-partner team from Dewey in New York, with corporate partners Berge Setrakian and Margaret Civetta joining last week (11 May) alongside litigators Kevin Walsh and Gassan Baloul.
