Robinson to cement BLP's Tesco ties with Asia secondment ahead of firm's planned launch in Beijing

Berwin Leighton Paisner's (BLP's) former chairman Peter Robinson (pictured) is set to take up an in-house secondment with Tesco in Shanghai before relocating to Beijing later this year to launch a new office for the firm, it has emerged.

Robinson, whose term as chairman at the top 20 UK firm came to an end at the close of last month, will be seconded to Tesco in the coming weeks for a period of three to six months in a bid to cement BLP's ties with the retail giant in Asia.

Following his secondment, Robinson is expected to move to Beijing to head up a new office for the firm in the Chinese capital, with BLP currently in the process of applying for a licence for the new base.

The news comes after BLP opened an office in Hong Kong in August last year, a move understood to be part of an effort to extend the firm's UK relationship with Tesco to Asia.

The firm relocated corporate partner David Robins to head up the Hong Kong branch, with Tesco real estate relationship partner Victoria Gardner moving to the region shortly after.

In a statement, Tesco said: "Peter Robinson will be engaged with Tesco on a short-term secondment in Shanghai to ensure that our business there has the necessary legal skills and experience in place while we look to make a permanent appointment."

Tesco is one of BLP's key clients, with the firm seconding around four associates per year to the supermarket chain's headquarters in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire.

Robinson stepped down as BLP chairman in April after 18 years in the role. He has been replaced by real estate head Robert MacGregor.
