The Australian Government has slashed its legal panel to 68 firms, with Clifford Chance (CC) emerging as the only UK adviser with an Australian presence not included on the line-up.
The panel – known as the legal services multi-use list (LSMUL) – is the first time national government agencies have been required to use the streamlined roster for legal services purchasing, with the aim of driving cost efficiencies. The new panel – which cuts the number of approved advisers from 152 – was announced today (1 June).
Firms will provide advice in four broad categories: corporate and commercial; dispute resolution and litigation; government and administrative law; and all other legal services. DLA Piper is the only UK firm to appear on all four lists, with Norton Rose Australia signed up to three of the four.
Government agencies without prior panel arrangements are required to use the LSMUL as of today, while those with existing panels will be expected to transition by 1 June 2013.
The shake-up comes after the Blunn Krieger and Gruen reports into Commonwealth legal services purchasing, which led to a number of reforms aimed at improving the management and delivery of legal services across the jurisdiction.
Such centralised buying of legal services is relatively rare globally, though the UK Government uses a broadly comparable model, which handles a significant amount of Whitehall's legal spending.
