SJ Berwin has expanded its finance practice in London with the hire of former Herbert Smith partner Chris Fanner.

Fanner (pictured) left Herbert Smith earlier this year and will join SJ Berwin on Monday (2 July). He has a practice focusing on leveraged finance, structured emerging markets and infrastructure finance and his clients include banks, financial institutions, funds, as well as corporate borrowers.

Fanner has previously worked at Norton Rose and legacy Denton Wilde Sapte after training at Clifford Chance. He joined Dentons in 1997 from Norton Rose and became head of the firm's leveraged finance practice in 2002, before resigning to join Herbert Smith in late 2005.

Managing partner Rob Day said: "Attracting a lawyer like Chris Fanner is a sign of the growing strength of our international finance team. It is part of our strategy of building up our core practice areas and delivering the highest level of service to our clients around the world."

Fanner added: "SJ Berwin's finance practice has ambitious plans and I am looking forward to joining the team and playing my part in bringing those plans to fruition."

Other recent hires in SJ Berwin's finance practice include Rinku Bhadoria from Clifford Chance and Andrew Bliss from US firm Sidley Austin.
