Norton Rose has won a key role on the C$3.1bn (£2bn) acquisition of ING's Canada arm by Scotiabank, in what is understood to be the largest bank M&A deal in the country for more than a decade.

ING is a longstanding client of Norton Rose, but this is the first time the law firm has advised the Dutch financial services group on Canadian matters.

The Norton Rose team is led by corporate finance partners Peter Wiazowski and Andrew Fleming, flanked by M&A partner Marc Duquette, tax partner Derek Chiasson, pension and benefits partners Anne Gallop and Martin Rochette, competition partner Kevin Ackhurst and public law partner Ruth Wahl.

The team are all formerly of Canada's Ogilvy Renault, which merged into the Norton Rose Group on 1 June 2011.

Sullivan & Cromwell advised ING on US legal aspects of the deal. Banking partner Mark Menting led the team, which comprised M&A partner Brian Hamilton, intellectual property partner Nader Mousavi, tax partner Ronald Creamer and executive compensation partner Matthew Friestedt.

Canadian law firm Torys assisted Scotiabank with a 13-partner team that included corporate head Michael Siltala, corporate partner and financial institutions head Blair Keefe, corporate and securities partner Cornell Wright, tax partners Corrado Cardarelli and Andrew Wong and head of competition and antitrust Jay Holsten.
