Peter Kalis has been appointed for a fifth term as chairman and global managing partner of K&L Gates after a unanimous vote by the US firm's management committee.

K&L Gates' management committee, comprising sixty voting members representing the firm's offices and major practices, re-appointed Kalis, who ran unopposed, following partner consultations in each of the firm's 41 offices.

The appointment will take Kalis through to February 2017, at which point he will have been in the role for 20 years. During his tenure, Kalis has seen the firm through eight mergers and increased revenues in each year of his leadership.

He has continuously served as head of the firm since 1997, when legacy firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart was a regional US firm with six offices. The firm now has nearly 2,000 lawyers in 41 offices on four continents.

Kalis stated "it remains an honour and privilege to serve our firm and our profession".

In a statement, Asia managing partner David Tang said Kalis's leadership had helped "the Asia offices to thrive during the financial crisis", with Europe managing partner Martin Lane adding: "Pete's visionary role in creating a truly integrated global platform, combined with his strong commitment to Europe as part of that platform, have been, and will continue to be, the source of inspiration, encouragement, energy, and success for the entire European practice."
