Kirkland & Ellis has announced five partner promotions in both London and Hong Kong as part of an 84-strong global promotions round.

This year's promotions, which are effective from 1 October, mark a slight increase on last October, when three partners were made up in both London and Hong Kong in an 80-strong round.

In Kirkland's London office, Justin Hutchinson and Sava Savov have been promoted in the corporate practice, while John MacGarty has been made up in the private funds group, alongside Samuel Norris in debt finance and Shannon Yavorsky in intellectual property.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong partnership has been bolstered by four promotions in the corporate group – Matthew Gerber, Jamii Quoc, Stephanie Tang and Steven Tran – with Carol Liu made up in the private funds practice.

Kirkland's Hong Kong base was significantly expanded last year with the hire of eight partners from Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, Latham & Watkins and Allen & Overy.

The remaining promotions from this year's round include two in Munich – Ulf Kieker in tax and Nicole Schlatter in corporate – and 28 in the firm's headquarters in Chicago, with the rest shared between the firm's other domestic US offices in Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, San Francisco and Washington DC.
