Canada's Fasken Martineau is merging with South African outfit Bell Dewar, as interest in the region from international law firms continues to grow.

Bell Dewar's 76-lawyer team is combining with Fasken's Johannesburg office, which opened in 2003 and comprises two partners, two associates and a consultant.

The two firms are expected to be fully integrated by the beginning of February 2013. Bell Dewar managing partner Blaize Vance will become Africa managing partner and will be based at Fasken's Johannesburg office.

Vance commented: "As we looked to expand our base and grow our Africa business, we considered a number of potential partners. Fasken Martineau was the obvious choice given the firm's reach, expertise and global capabilities."

Fasken managing partner David Corbett said: "Our firm has long been known for our unique understanding of the African marketplace. This merger speaks both to the power of our brand and to the expanded capabilities and services we now offer to our global clients.

The consolidated Johannesburg team will have a particular focus on mining, infrastructure, energy, project finance, capital markets and M&A work throughout Africa.

The news comes after Legal Week revealed earlier this year that Linklaters was in exclusive alliance talks with South African outfit Webber Wentzel.
