The Legal Services Board (LSB) has announced that it is accepting applications to join its panel of legal advisers.

The regulator says it requires assistance in public and private law, legislative drafting and litigation support on a fixed or capped fee basis.

The LSB is currently advised by Thirty Nine Essex Street and Hogan Lovells. It is expected that the panel will remain as a two-firm line-up.

If appointed, expected timescales and costs of work are to be agreed between parties on a case-by-case basis, with the new two-year appointments commencing on 1 January next year.

The overall volume of legal work is expected to be relatively low; however, the LSB points out that the potential of legal challenges means that amount of work could fluctuate at short notice.

The LSB's legal budget comes from within its overall annual budget of £4.5m, with pieces of legal work typically valued below £5,000.

An LSB spokesperson said: "Although the work doesn't offer the greatest financial reward we believe the issues we deal with in overseeing the reform of the legal sector will prove to be attractive and something firms will want to be associated with."

The deadline for final submissions is 16 November, with applicants set to be judged on suitability, competence, value for money and accurate, detailed and transparent billing.

The LSB comprises approximately 30 staff including two solicitors – legal director Nick Glocking and legal advisor Jessica Clay.
