The Law Society of Singapore has named Rodyk & Davidson partner Lok Vi Ming as its new president, replacing Wong Meng Meng SC, who has held the position for the last two years.

Lok, who is currently vice president, will assume his new role on 1 January next year, having been elected to serve for 2013. Wong, a senior counsel at Singapore law firm WongPartnership, has held the role since August 2010.

Lok, who is also a litigation and arbitration partner at Rodyk, one of the city-state's oldest law firms, has sat on the Singapore Law Society council since January 2009. He also heads Rodyk's aviation practice, and is an internationally recognised aviation lawyer.

Speaking about his new role, he said: "This appointment comes with tremendous responsibility but I have full confidence that the new council will be able to help bring the society to new heights and the profession even closer together.

"Meng Meng has, during his tenure as president, made remarkable progress in strengthening the secretariat, the society's financial position and the society's pro bono initiatives."

Wong will remain on the council as immediate past president, in line with the terms of the Legal Profession Act.

The 22 member council has also elected Thio Shen Yi SC and Leo Cheng Suan as joint vice-presidents and Kelvin Wong as treasurer.
