Winners: Irwin Mitchell, The College of Law and ILEX

"It's the kind of thing that might make me want to be a client of theirs if I could get one of my team on their training programme," said one of the judges of Irwin Mitchell's winning tie-up with The College of Law and ILEX.

Going into partnership with The College of Law and ILEX Tutorial College in 2011, Irwin Mitchell became the first-ever UK law firm to launch its own legal and business education programme leading to an LLM in Legal Practice Management.

Experts from all three organisations collaborated to create a series of career-spanning professional development programmes tailored to Irwin Mitchell's specific business needs.

The so-called IMU Law and Business School currently has more than 220 students progressing through its various programmes, from paralegals to partners.

Irwin Mitchell says the programme helps it "develop 'home grown' talent that ensures we quickly spot our talent and develop staff according to their capability, irrespective of their background or previous education opportunities".

It says it has increased employee engagement, boosted business awareness, enhanced loyalty and improved retention rates. The programme has also been successful in attracting new talent, becoming a key recruitment tool in a competitive market.

At the Awards, Jenny Pelling from ILEX, Andy Wadham from Irwin Mitchell and Tricia Chatterton from the College of Law (all pictured, left to right) collected the prize.
