Irwin Mitchell has confirmed the hire of a 14-strong team from DLA Piper's Manchester arm, following the news last year that the firm was set to take on a quartet of DLA real estate partners from the office.
DLA Manchester real estate chief Anita Weightman, former office managing partner Roy Beckett and property partners Patrick Duffy and Tony Weightman will take up their new roles at Irwin Mitchell on 1 February. They will be joined by a team of 10 from DLA Piper, including five associates.
Legal Week revealed last October that the partner quartet had handed in their resignations at DLA and were set to join Irwin Mitchell. The hires for Irwin Mitchell take partner count in the firm's national real estate team to 21.
Anita Weightman has overseen DLA's work on a raft of high-profile deals in the northwest real estate market, including ITV's relocation to MediaCityUK and Vue Entertainment Investments' £450m sale of its cinema chain to private equity outfit Doughty Hanson in 2010.
Meanwhile, Beckett, who has been a partner at DLA for more than 20 years, is the former managing partner of the firm's Manchester office, which he led for eight years.
Irwin Mitchell national real estate head Paul Firth (pictured) said: "This is a tremendously exciting period of growth for the firm and I believe they will prove an important platform and catalyst for growth within our Manchester office."
Irwin Mitchell's real estate practice, which was boosted in 2010 by the hire of a four-partner SJ Berwin team, has recently advised on mandates including property company Redevco's £160m sale of its Turkish portfolio and management platform to affiliates of the Blackstone Group.
The exits from DLA come amid a major redundancy consultation at the firm affecting 251 lawyers and back office staff, following a review of firm's UK business, the results of which are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
