Clifford Chance (CC) has scored a trophy role to advise Qatar's 2022 FIFA World Cup organising committee on infrastructure and projects.

The magic circle firm has been appointed by the Supreme Committee for Qatar 2022 to advise on its technical programme, which covers the development of the proposed Lusail Iconic Stadium.

The stadium complex, which will host the first and last games of the 2022 World Cup, is expected to have a capacity of over 85,000.

CC Doha managing partner Richard Parris will provide legal advice alongside Abu Dhabi banking partner Sandy Hall and City construction partners David Metzger and Tim Steadman.

Supreme Committee general counsel Andrew Longmate said: "The 2022 FIFA World Cup is a prestigious and high-profile event. It is essential that we work with suppliers who are best in class and can deliver a quality service. CC has won the first of a number of major legal advisory mandates that will be tendered over the coming months."

Parris added: "It is a privilege to be working on a high-profile project such as the Iconic Stadium which will set the benchmark for stadium development."

The latest appointment for CC comes after the firm also won a bid to advise the Olympic Delivery Authority on the £250m construction of the main London 2012 Olympic Stadium in 2006. The magic circle firm has also worked on infrastructure and development projects for other major sporting events including Poland's Euro 2012 programme.

In 2010, SNR Denton advised Qatar on its successful bid to host the 2022 World Cup, fielding a host of lawyers from its sports, intellectual property and corporate groups. The team was led by Doha-based partner Leigh Hall, who left the firm last year.
