Morrison & Foerster (MoFo) has added to its Hong Kong private equity team with the hire of Ropes & Gray partner Marcia Ellis.
Ellis, who was a partner at MoFo between 2007 and 2008, has rejoined her old firm this week to work alongside corporate partner Thomas Chou and M&A partner Jeremy Hunt, who joined the firm last year from magic circle firm Allen & Overy.
Her practice focuses on debt financing, private equity transactions and complex M&A, giving her extensive experience representing global funds in the acquisition and disposition of real estate assets, investment in real estate developers and the establishment of real estate joint ventures.
Having worked in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan, she is now recognised as a key private equity lawyer in Asia, and is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.
She brings the total number of partners at MoFo in Hong Kong to 11.
"We are delighted to welcome Marcia back – her experience aligns perfectly with the needs of our clients in China," said Ven Tan, managing partner of MoFo's Hong Kong office.
"She knows the private equity world very well. Her experience in both inbound and outbound China deals, in particular leveraged investments and buyouts, coupled with her Chinese language skills, make her a rare talent."
Eric Piesner, MoFo's managing partner for Asia, said that expanding and strengthening the firm's M&A and private equity practices in the region was a top priority for the firm.
Ellis began her career at Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, where she worked for 11 years and was promoted to counsel.
After leaving the firm and spending a year at MoFo, she then worked as Asia chief legal officer at DE Shaw Group, before moving to Ropes & Gray in April 2011.
Other firms to have boosted their private equity teams in recent months include Kirkland & Ellis, who recruited Frank Sun from US rival Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison in January, and King & Wood Mallesons, which sealed the hire of Baker & McKenzie's global head of private equity Mark McNamara in October.
