Eversheds has elected Ireland managing partner Alan Murphy as the new chairman of its international board following the retirement of predecessor David Gray.

The members of Eversheds International – which comprises the managing partners of all the firms within its international network – unanimously voted in Murphy (pictured) at a meeting in Stockholm last Thursday (25 April). The role has a four-year term.

Murphy's new role began on 1 May, and one of his first jobs will be to elect a deputy chair who, for the first time, will sit alongside him on Eversheds' overall management board to improve integration across the firm's 43 offices.

The international board was set up by former managing partner Gray in 2009 to police standards across the firm's 43 international offices. The board last year voted through a 12-point firmwide standards code.

Murphy is a commercial property lawyer who joined Eversheds when the firm merged with Dublin outfit O'Donnell Sweeney in 2006.

Eversheds chief executive Bryan Hughes said: "As chairman of Eversheds International, Alan will play a key role in ensuring consistent and seamless international client service and will continue to roll out our international project management tools across our Eversheds International operations."

Murphy added: "I am honoured to have been appointed as chairman for Eversheds International and look forward to building on David's legacy, ensuring cohesion across all our offices."

Eversheds also has a board for its LLP, which is led by chairman John Heaps.

The news comes after the firm this week announced 28 promotions in this year's partnership promotion round, a 30% increase on last year's figure of 22, with 18 of the new partners based outside of the UK.
