Legal Week has teamed up with a leading African in-house lawyers group to recognise the explosion of legal work taking place across the continent by launching The African Legal Awards.

The pan Africa awards, which are now open for entry at www.africanlegalawards.com, will take place in Johannesburg on 24 October.

The event is being jointly hosted by Legal Week and the Corporate Lawyers Association of South Africa (CLASA) and will feature 17 awards categories designed to recognise exceptional achievement by both in-house lawyers and those working in private practice.

News of the launch comes hard on the heels of the Corporate Counsel Middle East Awards 2013, which was jointly hosted by Legal Week and the Corporate Counsel Middle East Group, and saw 300 lawyers gather for a glittering awards ceremony in Dubai on 16 May.

The African Legal Awards will follow a similar format to the Middle East awards, featuring a mix of in-house and private practice awards as well as an achievement award, the recipient of which will be chosen by CLASA's board.

The judging panel will be chaired CLASA president Pavel Hassim, head office legal manager at WesBank, and will comprise members of CLASA along with a selection of senior figures from the African legal and business community.

Hassim said: "It gives me great pleasure and pride to announce that CLASA will, in association with Legal Week, co-host the African Legal Awards. While observing the global shift in the balance of forces of trade on the African continent, it is important for us to recognise and pay tribute to certain individuals who have played a pivotal role in ensuring the facilitation of commerce in the region."

John Malpas, publishing director of Legal Week, added: "With so much legal activity taking place in Africa we are confident that these awards will generate a high number of entries across all the categories. This in turn will make for a hugely competitive, atmospheric and enjoyable event."

The launch of the awards comes against a backdrop of bullish growth forecasts for the continent, with the World Bank last month predicting that economic growth in Africa would significantly outpace that of the rest of the world over the next three years. Foreign direct investment is expected to hit £36bn by 2015.

The relative economic health of the continent has in turn generated a flurry of attempts by UK and international firms to gain a greater foothold in the market, with examples including Linklaters' exclusive alliance with South Africa's Webber Wentzel, which went live earlier this year.

The awards will take place in the same week as Legal Week Corporate Counsel Africa, following the successful launch of this annual conference for senior in-house lawyers last year.
