Ashurst's standout deal for this category was its work advising Etihad Rail on the UAE's ambitious project to build a federal railway, the first part of which is due to start operating later this year.

For the judges, the firm's role advising on one of the most prestigious transport projects in the Middle East, combined with an impressive range of instructions and client wins, underlined the strength and depth of the firm's transportation, energy and infrastructure practice.

In early 2012, Ashurst was instructed by Etihad Rail to advise it on the operational contracts and procurement process for choosing its operational partner. The firm delivered a report outlining the key objectives of the project, including the contract structure, key contract terms and procurement strategy within a month of its engagement. The team went on to develop a programme for the procurement process and instituted weekly meetings with the Etihad Rail team to ensure tight deadlines were met throughout the process.

The firm's work on the project won it a glowing reference from its client. "They [Ashurst] have provided great legal support throughout, even when plans have had to change and new outputs have been required at short notice," said a statement from Etihad Rail in support of Ashurst's entry. "They have been fully engaged, proactive and flexible members of our team, playing a full part in meeting the objectives of our business."
