A former Linklaters employee connected to a recent employment tribunal case is facing charges of defrauding the magic circle firm.

Raza Kanval, 34, a former supervisor at Linklaters' London legal services centre, appeared at City of London Magistrates' Court yesterday (18 June) alongside 29-year-old Karim Rashid, who is accused of possessing £86,869.55 in criminal proceeds.

The pair confirmed their names and addresses during a brief hearing. Rashid is not a current or former employee of Linklaters.

The case has been transferred to the Central Criminal Court and will begin on 25 July.

Kanval was suspended from Linklaters in March last year, and was dismissed shortly after on 31 May. He gave evidence at an employment tribunal last week following claims brought by former Linklaters paralegal Ali Hussain against his line manager, Hasan Bayat. Hussain accused Bayat of bullying, harassment, racial discrimination and fraudulent billing for time spent not working.

Linklaters carried out a one-week investigation within its London legal services centre into the allegations, concluding that there was insufficient evidence to support Hussain's allegations.

The employment tribunal finished yesterday, with the outcome set to be announced in the next four to six weeks.

Linklaters declined to comment.
