Herbert Smith Freehills has appointed a new chief financial officer (CFO) with the hire of Kirkland & Ellis finance chief Nick Willmott.

Willmott will start at the firm in September and be based in its London office. He joins from Kirkland where he has been CFO since 2004, based in its Chicago headquarters.

In his new role at Herbert Smith Freehills, Willmott will be responsible for leading the global business finance function and overseeing the structures to integrate and support the merged firm.

Herbert Smith Freehills partners are expecting to receive proposals on the planned move to a single modified lockstep after the summer, with the firm planning to introduce a combined partner remuneration structure from the start of the next financial year.

Prior to Kirkland, Willmott held senior finance positions at Pepsi and real estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle. He joined Jones Lang LaSalle several months after the merger between LaSalle Partners and Jones Lang Wootton in 1999, with much of his work focussed on merger integration.

David Willis, joint CEO, commented: "We are very pleased to have secured someone of Nick's calibre to this important position. He has the skill set and experience we are looking for and will play a critical role in the firm's on-going integration work. I and other members of the executive look forward to working closely with him."

Meanwhile Herbert Smith has also appointed Paul Roberts as finance director of UK, EMEA and Asia. Roberts will start in July and will also be based in London. He was previously finance director at BDO.
