Allen & Overy (A&O) has taken a lead role as fast food giant McDonald's unveils plans to expand its Asia presence with a move into the Vietnam market.

McDonald's, which operates in more than 100 countries around the world, announced today (16 July) it plans to open its first outlet in the Southeast Asian country in early 2014.

Vietnamese-American investor Henry Nguyen, founder of Good Day Hospitality and the son-in-law of Vietnam's prime minister, has been nominated as the US company's franchise partner and brand builder in Vietnam.

A&O acted for Nguyen with a team led by the firm's managing partner in Vietnam, Dao Nguyen, who is based in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnamese firm YKVN acted for McDonald's, with corporate partner and Singapore head K Minh Dang leading the firm's team. Dang joined the firm in 2011 after previously heading DLA Piper's Southeast Asia corporate practice.

McDonald's first Vietnam restaurant will be located in Ho Chi Minh City, and will bring the total number of Asian countries where it operates to 38. The McDonald's launch follows the entry of a string of Western food brands into the country, including Starbucks, Pizza Hut and Subway.

The deal is among several mandates won by A&O since its launch in Vietnam last year, for which it recruited Nguyen from US rival Mayer Brown JSM. In February the magic circle firm acted alongside Allens on a multibillion-dollar oil refinery project in the country – touted as one of Asia's most important energy developments.
