In this video, Andrew Garard, group legal director and company secretary at ITV, surveys the current state of the legal market for general counsel with Legal Week publisher John Malpas.
Garard, who is chairing the Legal Week Corporate Counsel Forum in September, says general counsel are having to do more with less but are also being presented with opportunities to widen their remit within their organisations.
"You can make a difference and you can also demonstrate the value that lawyers can bring to the business – not there to be the sales prevention department, not there to paper the deal but actually there to be part of constructing the deal and making sure that it is executed properly."
Garard goes on to explain how ITV's transformation plan has allowed him to expand his remit.
"It's produced opportunities. It has enabled me to get involved in things that perhaps in a more normal operating environment, I wouldn't have done. So I've now got responsibility for business continuity planning, risk management, health and safety on programmes – obviously a topical and high profile issue – together with our insurance portfolio and indeed I have joint responsibility for a revenue stream."
Other topics covered in this video include:
• Alternative billing and legal process outsourcing
• Social media and piracy
• Teaming up with law firms to enhance staff development and training
• ITV's involvement in the PRIME social mobility initiative
