K&L Gates has become the latest firm to bolster its M&A and energy teams in Singapore with the addition of two new partners.

The US firm has recruited White & Case energy partner Lian Yok Tan to advise on project finance, corporate and commercial matters related to large oil and gas deals, while corporate partner Nicholas Hanna joins from Watson Farley & Williams to work on private equity transactions and capital raising.

For K&L Gates, the appointment of Tan is the third time in the last three months that the firm has hired a partner from US rival White & Case, with the recruitment of M&A partner Virginia Tam in Hong Kong in May and PPP/PFI practice head Anthony Fine in London in July.

In June, the firm also hired Pinsent Masons energy disputes partner Mike Stewart in London to advise on major power projects work in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

K&L Gates now has six partners in Singapore, with a focus on capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance and disputes. The firm did not receive a licence to practice local law in Singapore in February, but said it may look to strengthen its offering in the city-state through a local tie-up.

It now has seven offices in Asia located in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong; Seoul, Singapore, Tapei and Tokyo. In Australia the firm, which merged with local firm Middletons in December, also has offices in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Last month it added added three new partners in employment and corporate for Australia, with the hire of labour and workplace safety partner Nick Ruskin in Melbourne from DLA Piper, and corporate and transactional lawyers Edward Nixey and Glenn Hughes in Sydney from Ashurst and Henry Davis York respectively.

The hires are the latest in a string of energy and M&A moves in Singapore in recent months, with Sidley Austin, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher and Morrison & Foerster (MoFo) among other firms to add partners in these practices.
