Berwin Leighton Paisner's (BLP) flexible working business Lawyers on Demand (LoD) has hired the firm's former HR director, Geoff Griffin, to act as a mentor for LoD's core team in London and attract more senior level partners.
Griffin – who will join LoD on 1 October – will work with co-founders Simon Harper and Jonathan Brenner to help expand the company. His appointment follows former Financial Times GC, Tim Bratton, who joined LoD as practice development director in September.
In June, the business added a 'pay-as-you-go' service, which will give clients access to legal help remotely to manage surges in workload.
The new operation, known as LoD On Call, will operate as a sister service to BLP's existing LoD service which has been rebranded as LoD On Site. LoD On Site operates on a secondment-style basis, with selected lawyers or teams of lawyers working in-house and with law firms for a designated number of days per week. In contrast LoD On Call lawyers will work via the internet, email or telephone to help clients on short-term projects.
In his new role of people and development advisor, Griffin will advise on LOD's new law firm strategy, as well as attracting more senior, partner level lawyers into LOD's team.
Prior to BLP Griffin qualified as a chartered accountant at Spicer and Oppenheim (now part of Deloitte), before joining Baker Tilly where he became their national staff partner. Griffin has been a member of the LoD board since it became a separate entity in June 2013 – a position he will continue with in his new role.
LoD posted turnover of £9m for the 2012-13 financial year, following strong growth since its 2007 launch. The venture now boasts a roster of 120 lawyers.
LOD Co-Founder, Simon Harper, said: "Geoff was one of the first people we approached when the idea for LOD was first conceived, and he played an instrumental role in helping us bring LOD to life."
Griffin added: "During my time at BLP, I've thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the LOD business both in an advisory capacity and also as a buyer of their services as HR Director. It is a business model that I have a great affinity for and it is exciting to be joining a ground-breaking business with huge potential."
