Simmons & Simmons funds partner Steven Whittaker has left the firm to join New York hedge fund specialist Schulte Roth & Zabel.

Whittaker was made up as partner at the UK firm twelve years ago after he started at the firm in 1997.

He will join a team of nearly 20 funds lawyers at the US firm's City practice, which includes 10 partners. His departure date has not yet been confirmed.

Whittaker advises on the establishment, listing and reconstruction of investment funds in the UK and offshore financial centres. His practice also involves UK advisory and regulatory work for asset management clients.

Schulte Roth opened the London base in 2002 in a drive to extend its high-profile investment funds practice into Europe.

Funds partners Tim Pearce and Ian Meade left Simmons to join Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld's London base in early 2012. A few months later Simmons moved to boost its asset management sector group with the hire of DLA Piper's UK investment funds team head David Williams.

Simmons' partnership approved the launch of asset management as a separate sector group for the firm alongside energy and infrastructure; financial institutions; life sciences; and technology, media and telecoms last spring.

In October Simmons announced a non-exclusive alliance with US funds outfit Seward & Kissel for hedge fund and asset management work.
