Herbert Smith Freehills has ramped up in Australia with the hire of two new partners.

Corporate partner David Ryan joins the Sydney team from Baker & McKenzie, whilst finance partner David Lyons has moved to HSF in Brisbane from Norton Rose Fulbright.

Ryan was global head of mining and metals with Bakers, and had a strong energy and resources practice focusing on M&A in the electricity and gas sector. He will continue to concentrate on M&A and offer more general commercial advice in his new role.

Lyons has extensive experience advising financial services clients, and on transactional, regulatory and corporate matters.

His capability spans infrastructure, resource and project finance, as well as regulatory, capital markets, property, acquisition, asset, agricultural and trade finance.

Herbert Smith Freehills has lost a number of partners in Australia this year as the legacy outfits gear up for full financial integration.

Those to have left include litigation partners Michael Mills and Michelle Fox, who joined Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan in May, employment partners Darren Perry, Chris Gardner, Justine Turnbull, Ben Dudley and Luke Edwards, who agreed to join Seyfarth Shaw in June, and another senior employment partner Erica Hartley, whose pending move to HWL Ebsworth was announced last month.

Speaking about the recent hires, HSF's Australian managing partner Jason Ricketts said they were key in adding capacity to the firm's commercial practice.

"Herbert Smith Freehills remains focused on ensuring we have a strong and diverse team of legal expertise to deliver perceptive commercial advice to our clients.

"We have needed to increase our resources to service clients in these areas within certain markets."
