Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy has made a second key hire from Allen & Overy in Asia this year with the appointment of the firm's head of international capital markets for the region and Philippines group leader James Grandolfo.
The US outfit, which also recruited the magic circle firm's Tokyo managing partner and project finance expert Aled Davies in May, has recently been building up its partners in Asia following the departure of some key figures.
Grandolfo, who is top ranked by Chambers & Partners and runs A&O's regional international capital markets team from Hong Kong, will also be based in the city with Milbank.
He has extensive experience in US debt, equity and equity-linked capital markets transactions and on deals in India, and is a key partner in A&O's Asia-based US practice.
Aside from capital markets, he also heads the magic circle firm's Philippines global interest group, and is known in the region for being among a handful of partners with a long-established practice in the country.
He has worked extensively with the government on corporate and finance deals.
In a statement, A&O said: "We would like to thank James for the contribution he has made during his time at Allen & Overy and wish him all the best for the future."
The hire is understood to be a strategic one for Milbank, which earlier this year saw the exit of two significant lawyers, namely Asia corporate head and Greater China managing partner Anthony Root and Beijing chief representative Ed Sun.
It also lost project finance partner Mark Plenderleith to magic circle firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in April 2012, but has since appointed A&O's Aled Davies to replace him.
Davies, also top ranked by Chambers & Partners, joined the US firm in September to work in Tokyo alongside office managing partner Alec Borisoff, who also specialises in project finance.
The firm is thought to be looking for further opportunities to grow its China practice.
Milbank was unavailable for comment.
