Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has named David Broomhall as new co-head of its competition practice.

Broomhall, a partner since 1999 and Brussels competition head since 2005, succeeds John Davies, who will return to full-time fee earning. Fellow co-head Dusseldorf-based partner Martin Klusmann will continue in his role.

Broomhall was also the magic circle firm's Brussels office managing partner. That role will now be taken on by fellow competition partner Thomas Janssens.

Will Lawes, senior partner at Freshfields, said: "The competition practice at Freshfields is preeminent in its field, a position it has consolidated under the expert guidance of Martin and John.

"I would like to thank John for his excellent leadership of the practice and wish David every success as he takes the group forward. He and Martin make an excellent team and I am sure the practice will continue to flourish with them both at the helm."

Davies added: "Being co-head with Martin has been one of the most enjoyable times of my career. The partners here are very supportive and everyone is keen to work as a team. We believe we have been successful in consolidating our position internationally. I am ready to return full time to my client relationships."

Another partner in the competition practice, David Aitman, was recently promoted to global managing partner, meaning he is now likely to cut back on fee earning. Aitman is also a former co-head of the global competition practice.
