Ashurst global head of corporate Stephen Lloyd has resigned from the partnership.
Lloyd has been a partner at Ashurst since 2003 and was appointed joint head of the global corporate, commercial and competition practice in July alongside legacy Blakes partner Phil Breden who is based in Sydney.
It is understood that Lloyd is in talks with a City firm and a US firm. Potential candidates cited to replace Lloyd include corporate partner Mark Sperotto and former head of Ashurst's Middle East practice Nick Williamson.
Lloyd's resignation comes just weeks after the firm's senior partner Charlie Geffen – like Lloyd, one of the firm's top private equity lawyers – lost out on the vote for chairman of the firm.
In October dispute resolution partner Ben Tidswell beat Geffen in a vote among partners for the role of chairman. Tidswell ran against Geffen and legacy Blakes competition and consumer protection partner Peter Armitage. Prior to being senior partner Geffen was head of Ashurst's private equity practice.
A spokesperson for the firm said: "Stephen has made a considerable contribution to the Corporate Practice and the firm. He is a talented lawyer and we will be sorry to see him go but we wish him the very best for the future."
Ashurst officially merged with legacy Australian firm Blake Dawson last Friday (1 November). On Tuesday the firm finalised its global management team with the election of eight partners to its board.
Sydney competition partner Peter Armitage, London banking partner Mark Vickers, and corporate partners Simon Beddow (London), Roger Davies (Perth), and Robert Oglivy Watson (Hong Kong) have all been added. There were also re-appointments for corporate partners Ian Williams (Sydney) and Reinhard Eyring (Frankfurt) and Madrid real estate partner Cristina Calvo.
The news follows the transfer of several high profile private equity practice leaders in London in recent months – Linklaters' private equity heads Ian Bagshaw and Richard Youle are set to join White & Case while Clifford Chance global head of private equity David Walker quit for Latham & Watkins earlier this year.
Berwin Leighton Paisner's global head Raymond McKeeve recently made the move to Jones Day while head of finance Matthew Kellett announced his resignation from BLP last week.
