Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer private equity partner Chris Bown has left to join private equity house CVC, a major client of the magic circle firm's corporate group.

Bown will retire from the firm in April 2014 and join CVC Capital Partners as a senior adviser. His role will include advising deal teams, working alongside CVC's external counsel and in-house legal team.

Bown was Freshfields' former global co-head of private equity and founded its London-based private equity practice.

In an internal email to staff Bown said: "After 15 very happy and fulfilling years at Freshfields I have decided that it is time for me to take on a different role. I have been very privileged to work with so many talented colleagues, fellow advisers and clients in the course of my career in private practice, and I very much hope to continue to do so over the years to come. My new role will also give me time to take on other broader commitments and indulge other interests, and I look forward to exploring those."

In April 2012 Bown led a team on the €2.65bn (£2.2bn) sale of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) brewing group StarBev to Canada's Molson Coors, advising StarBev and CVC.

CVC has had an active period of investment recently, after it announced a joint bid with ValueAct Capital for FTSE 250 tech company Misys last year, with Freshfields advising CVC on the bid.

Bown is the latest in a number of senior departures for clients in recent months, including managing partner Ted Burke, who left ahead of the end of his term to join ArcLight Capital while the firm's former City head Tim Jones has taken up a stint as general counsel for England Rugby 2015.

Freshfields London corporate head Julian Long said: "Chris, Tim and Barry (O'Brien) were all long planned retirements after very successful careers here and we are looking forward to working with each of them in the future as clients or with us looking after clients. There are important roles for those looking for a further challenge and Chris' move to CVC is a good example of this."
