Fox International Channels (FIC) has appointed Francis Chang as its new general counsel for Asia to help manage increased workflow stemming from the company's recent growth in the region.

Chang, who has been named senior vice president for legal and business affairs and general counsel for Asia Pacific and the Middle East, joins the company this week from top Canadian firm Blake Cassels & Grayson, and will work alongside the current senior counsel for Asia, Stephen Lim.

As chief legal advisor for the region, Chang will be responsible for managing FIC's legal team across 14 offices, and working with all levels of the organisation and teams to oversee business deals, negotiations, contracts and legal matters.

Based in Hong Kong, he will report to Zubin Gandevia, FIC's president of Asia Pacific and the Middle East, and Rita Tuzon, executive vice president and general counsel for the FOX Networks Group in the US.

Prior to his appointment, Chang spent eight years at the Canadian law firm based in Vancouver, where he began as associate counsel in 2005 and made partner three years later in 2008.

He has extensive experience in areas such as corporate, commercial, technology, licensing and intellectual property law, having also done a stint at STAR TV as vice president and deputy general counsel between 1999 and 2005, and another period at Walt Disney Television International.

FIC is an international subsidiary of US TV network Fox Entertainment Group, encompassing all of the company's non-US business across Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

The company, which has more than 300 channels in 45 languages, has grown significantly in Asia in the last year after News Corporation's acquisition of ESPN's partnership interest in Singapore-based ESPN Star Sports (ESS) in November 2012.

FIC now operates and distributes over 30 channels in Asia, with brands including FOX, STAR and National Geographic.

Across Asia and the Middle East, it has offices in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Australia and the UAE.
