DLA Piper has appointed Ian Brierley as its new UK head of real estate, replacing Simon Cookson in the role.

Cookson has held the role for two years after he joined the firm from Ashurst to lead the firm's real estate practice.

Cookson previously led the London real estate team at Ashurst until 2007. He has now moved into a fee-earning role.

Brierley joined DLA Piper as partner in 2000 from Clifford Chance. He also heads up the firm's 23-strong real estate litigation group, and will continue to oversee the practice alongside his new role.

The news comes after Berwin Leighton Paisner recruited DLA Piper partner Karen Friebe last month to join its London real estate practice.

Friebe – who will start at BLP in the New Year, was the global co-chair of DLA Piper's hospitality and leisure group and led the firm's EMEA hospitality and leisure team for several years.

Last year DLA Piper saw the departure of a quartet of real estate partners from its Manchester office. The team, which joined Irwin Mitchell's partnership, comprised local practice chief Anita Weightman and partners Roy Beckett, Patrick Duffy and Tony Weightman.
