Allen & Overy (A&O) has joined forces with BPP Law School for the launch of a business-focused Legal Practice Course (LPC).

The firm will require its trainees to undertake an enhanced LPC from January 2015, as the firm makes a bid to increase commercial awareness among its junior lawyers.

The new course will include a series of business modules that will be taught both online and in face-to-face classes.

The LPC will continue into the training contract, when trainees will work on a business intelligence project on a relevant topic, such as an industry sector or client. Upon completion they will receive an MA (LPC with Business) qualification.

A&O training principal David Campbell said: "Launching this master's programme ensures we continue to lead the market on training: this will further improve our junior lawyers' business knowledge and their ability to provide our clients with commercially relevant advice.

"This will better equip them for a career in commercial law and provides the added benefit of a master's-level qualification."

The magic circle firm appointed BPP after a competitive tender process, ending its current arrangement with LPC provider, the University of Law. BPP has also agreed to provide the firm's Graduate Diploma in Law from September 2014.

A&O last week became the first major law firm to post retention rates for its spring 2014 intake, with the firm set to keep on 84% of its newly-qualified (NQ) lawyers.
