Clayton Utz will add four new lawyers to its partnership ranks as of 1 January, 2014.

The Australian firm, one of the country's two 'big six' that remain independent, has promoted lawyers in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth spanning construction and major projects, disputes and workplace relations.

The promotions are down by one on last year, when the firm made up five lawyers in insurance, real estate, litigation, construction and telecoms and IP.

At the time the firm was also among a group of Australian outfits making cutbacks at associate and support level.

Clayton Utz currently has 197 partners, down from 201 in July this year, when it confirmed plans to sublet two floors or approximately 3,000 sqm of the 23,000 sqm it occupies in 1 Bligh Street.

It said the move followed lawyer turnover and roles not being replaced, in addition to a small number of redundancies and limited hires in the first half of 2013.

However, the firm has also recruited some significant individuals at partner level during the last 12 months, including King & Wood Mallesons real estate partner Andrew Norman in Melbourne and Allen & Overy capital markets partner Sonia Goumenis in Sydney.

Others to have joined the firm this year are in-house lawyer David Ephraums, who was previously a partner at Australian financial services company AMP, and another King & Wood Mallesons partner Andrew Leece, who specialises in ACT and joined Clayton Utz in Canberra.

This month, it also announced that litigation partner Robert Cutler would be promoted to the role of chief executive partner next June as existing firm head Darryl McDonough prepares to step down from the role to return to practice in Brisbane.

Those promoted to partner from 2014 include:
Jonathan McTigue, construction and major projects practice, Melbourne
Anna Casellas, workplace relations, employment and safety, Perth
Scott Grahame, litigation and dispute resolution, Sydney
Orla McCoy, litigation and dispute resolution, Sydney
