The former director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer QC has received a knighthood for services to law and criminal justice.

He is one of a number of UK legal professionals recognised in the 2014 New Year Honours list.

Starmer (pictured) stood down as head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in October, after announcing in April that he would not be extending his five year term in the role.

He has since returned to leading criminal set Doughty Street Chambers, where he was joint head of chambers and head of the criminal team before taking up the role of DPP in November 2008.

Others to be recognised for services to law and the legal profession include former Law Society chief executive and president Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, who was awarded a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to legal aid.

Also awarded the CBE were CPS senior policy adviser Pamela Bowen, for services to law and order and human trafficking criminal prosecution policy, and Hailsham Chambers personal injury and professional negligence Professor Harvey McGregor QC, for services to the law and education.

Meanwhile, several past and current members of the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) were recognised, including former director general Trevor Pearce, who was awarded a CBE, and Andrew Basford and former USA regional director Nicholas Lewis, who were both awarded an OBE.

SOCA intelligence collection team leader Barabara Spooner was also recognised with an MBE.

Other legal professionals to be recognised include Family Rights Group deputy chief executive and principal legal adviser Bridget Lindley who was awarded an OBE for services to families, and principal private secretary to the Treasury Solicitor Janine Bush, who was given an MBE for services to the government legal service.

39 Essex Street's Richard Harwood was also awarded an OBE for services to planning and environment law decision-making, which the QC called "a very nice surprise".

"It is pleasant to be recognised for some of the things that I have done," he added. "The support of colleagues in Chambers has been of great assistance."

Last year saw longstanding Allen & Overy corporate partner and former Lord Mayor of the City of London David Wootton knighted for services to legal business, charity and the City of London.
