Dechert's Hong Kong managing partner Basil Hwang has left the firm to join Zhong Lun's associated office in the city.
Hwang, who specialises in cross border M&A, private equity, funds and corporate work, joined Zhong Lun's Hong Kong partner Boughton Peterson Yang Anderson at the beginning of the month, bringing the total number of partners to 13.
He had previously worked for Dechert for more than six years, and was responsible for founding its Asia practice in 2007.
Speaking about his move, Hwang said he was keen to work for a firm with a strong PRC law capability.
He said he also wanted to be part of a more substantial Hong Kong corporate group, with a significant focus on capital markets.
Hwang joined Dechert in 2007 to launch its Hong Kong base, which was its first office in Asia.
He was originally appointed a partner of Dechert LLP and managing partner of its associate firm Hwang & Co, as the Hong Kong Law Society requires all foreign firms to practice in partnership with local outfits for three years before using their own names.
The firm has since launched a second office in Beijing, headed by partner Jingzhou Tao, and focuses on practices such as corporate, private equity, IP, life sciences and disputes.
The firm is also mulling opening in Shanghai and Singapore as part of a new pan-Asian growth strategy.
Hwang was previously a partner at the Hong Kong office of US firm Paul Hastings, where we worked in the corporate group for two years.
Prior to that, he worked as counsel for O'Melveny & Myers and also as an associate for Clifford Chance and for local Singaporean outfit Allen & Gledhill.
Zhong Lun opened its Hong Kong office in early 2010 in association with Roger Ho & Co.
In February 2011 it entered into a new arrangement with Boughton Peterson Yang Anderson (BYPA), which saw Roger Ho & Co also merge into the firm.
