Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has become the first magic circle firm to break into the top 100 UK employers for LGB staff, according to the charity Stonewall's annual index.
Freshfields came in joint 66th place, alongside Norton Rose Fulbright, out of 369 organisations taking part. These included included major multinationals, banks, central government and sports organisations.
Over the past year Freshfields has developed its LGBT network 'Halo' – which now has more than 100 members from 15 offices. The firm also hosted its first ever LGBT conference which brought together LGBT colleagues from across the its network. The firm also supported London's bid to host the 2018 Gay Games and continues to work with Diversity Role Models, a charity that works to eliminate homophobic bullying in schools.
Andrew Austin (pictured) a partner sponsor for 'Halo' said: "We are really pleased with this result. The three main areas we have focused on are rolling out our LGBT initiatives internationally, working with clients to best develop our LGBT network group Halo and undertaking LGBT-focussed community engagement. Never ones to stand still, we are also hoping to roll out an allies programme across the firm this year to get even more supporters involved."
Simmons & Simmons is the top ranked law firm in the UK for the sixth year running, having been promoted to eighth place. The firm is among 650 members of the Diversity Champions Programme run by Stonewall and a founding partner of Stonewall's Global Diversity Champions, along with IBM, Google, Citi, Thomson Reuters, BP, Freshfields, Proctor & Gamble, RBS and Barclays.
Baker & McKenzie was placed 19th, with CMS Cameron McKenna and Herbert Smith Freehills in joint 30th place, followed by Hogan Lovells in 35th place.
Over the past year Bakers' LGBT group has sponsored the Pride in London Gala Dinner and took part in DiverCity (an afternoon of seminars and networking opportunities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students interested in a career as a lawyer in the City).
Further down the rankings, Eversheds and Pinsent Masons take joint 45th place while Irwin Mitchell was in position 58.
