King & Wood Mallesons' London head Robert Hanley has left the firm to join Seyfarth Shaw in the city along with counsel Jonathon Wood.

Hanley, who joined Mallesons in London in 2008 from the UK office of Australia's Minter Ellison, is a key member of the KWM M&A practice team with over 25 years' experience advising on English and Australian law.

He has been appointed a partner in the international department of US outfit Seyfarth Shaw, to work alongside international group head and a former Minter Ellison colleague Darren Gardner, based in San Francisco.

His departure comes just two months after the Sino-Australian giant merged with UK outfit SJ Berwin.

He is currently the third partner in Seyfarth Shaw's London office, which opened in 2011 with the hire of Norton Rose global employment head Peter Talibart.

The other partner is employment lawyer Ming Henderson.

Seyfarth Shaw now has four offices outside of the US, located in London, Shanghai, Sydney and Melbourne.

The Chicago employment firm debuted in Asia last year with a Shanghai base, appointing former DLA Piper corporate partner Wan Li as managing partner.

Li is now working alongside counsel Jeffrey Sims and two associates to focus on employment and energy matters.

It then opened in Australia in December with eight partners – five of which were from Herbert Smith Freehills, two from Ashurst and one from Arnold Bloch Leibler.

The firm said it would focus on national and cross-border labour and employment issues in the country.
