The head of litigation for Herbert Smith Freehills in South East Asia is to leave the firm to lead the regional disputes practice for Hogan Lovells.

Maurice Burke, who is based in Singapore with HSF, will begin his new role in May this year and will also be based with Hogan Lovells in the island city-state.

He will work closely with international arbitration partners Jonathan Leach and Paul Teo in Singapore, with the task of growing the firm's disputes practice across Southeast Asia.

He will join 12 partners in the Asian practice as a whole, which spans Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo.

Burke is the third partner to leave HSF in Singapore since September last year, and among a long list of lawyers to depart since the merger of legacy firms Herbert Smith and Freehills.

As part of the combination, 22 lawyers and support staff working in Freehills' Singapore office at 39 Robinson Road moved to 50 Raffles Place, where Herbert Smith was located.

Recent partner exits include former Freehills Singapore head John Dick who moved to Ernst & Young in November to launch a legal services arm for the company in Singapore, and legacy Freehills energy partner Geoffrey Grice who took a consultant role at Duane Morris & Selvam in December.

Others to have left the firm in recent years include Herbert Smith energy partner Michelle Chen who joined US outfit Jones Day in November 2012, disputes lawyers Rob Palmer and Chris Bailey, who joined Ashurst as partners in Singapore and Tokyo respectively in December 2012, and consultant and Indonesia specialist Charles Ball, who joined Reed Smith in September 2013.

In an earlier statement, the firm said its Singapore office continued to be of fundamental importance to its practice in the region and that it had exciting investment plans for the office.

It said it had also added staff to the office since the merger, with Nicola Yeomans relocating to Singapore from Freehills in Sydney and banking and finance partner Rod Howell joining the firm from Allens in February.
