Baker & McKenzie has hired a team of 13 lawyers from collapsed Canadian firm Heenan Blaikie to join its Toronto office.

The group, which is made up of at least six partners, is led by corporate & securities partners Kevin Rooney and Sonia Yung, and will be spread across Bakers' corporate & securities, tax, and banking & finance practices. The other partners include Peter Clark (tax), Ilia Danef (finance), Charles MacCready (public M&A), and Corey MacKinnon (corporate).

Dentons Canada has taken on a further 22 lawyers from Heenan's Toronto and Montreal offices in addition to a team of seven lawyers last week.

The moves come shortly after talks with DLA Piper to take on a 60-70 strong group of Heenan lawyers to launch in the country fell through at the beginning of the week.

Eduardo Leite, chairman of Bakers' executive committee said: "Baker & McKenzie has been in Canada for more than 50 years, and our clients inside the country and around the world understand Canada's growing importance to the global economy."

The new additions will take the firm's total number of lawyers in Toronto to over 75.

Heenan announced it was shutting down its operations last week. Four of its lawyers have joined the Ottawa office of Fasken Martineau while Dentons Canada has hired a group of five real estate and two financial services lawyers from Heenan.
