Dechert is expected to launch in Singapore in the coming months after hiring O'Melveny & Myers (OMM) partner Dean Collins to run the new office, sources say.

The US firm, which first revealed plans to open in the city-state last November, is understood to have voted on the new hire earlier this month.

In a previous interview with Legal Week, former managing partner in Hong Kong and founder of the firm's Asia practice Basil Huang said the firm was looking to hire someone with an investment funds or disputes practice upon which it could build.

Collins is ranked Band 1 by Chambers & Partners for investment funds work in Singapore and has been in discussions with the firm for some time.

Dechert did not respond to Legal Week emails. Collins and OMM declined to comment.

Dechert's move into Singapore comes as a string of other international firms continue to eye the market for disputes, energy, projects, funds and corporate work.

Others considering a launch in the island city-state include Winston & Strawn, Paul Hastings, Minter Ellison and King & Wood Mallesons.

Dechert opened its first Asian office in Hong Kong in 2007 with a focus on corporate and securities work. It launched a second office in Beijing in 2008.

Its hire of Collins follows two other recent departures from OMM in Asia.

In January, it was announced that DLA Piper had hired OMM Hong Kong partner Mark Fairbairn to head its restructuring group for the region and at the same time, of counsel Ashley Bell joined DLA in Singapore.
