Australia's HWL Ebsworth has recruited five new partners to bolster its insurance, commercial and banking practices domestically.
The firm is understood to be on a growth drive, having also recruited three insurance partners and twenty lawyers from DLA Piper to join its Sydney office in November, as well as a workplace relations partner from Herbert Smith Freehills and a commercial property partner from Minter Ellison to join its Perth practice in September.
Of the new hires, three are insurance specialists. They include former Piper Alderman lawyers Scott Hay and David Andersen, who have joined the firm in Sydney, and Andrew Cheetham from Tresscox, who is based in Brisbane.
On the banking and finance side Paul Gatward has been added in Sydney from Clayton Utz, having spent more than nineteen years with that firm acting for financiers, borrowers and sponsors on a range of general corporate, acquisition, construction and property-related finance matters.
Meanwhile Andrew Shearwood has joined the commercial team in Perth, after 33 years at Herbert Smith Freehills, 27 as a partner.
Perth is the firm's most recently opened base, launching on July 1 last year with six partners and 25 legal staff from corporate boutique Downings Legal.
In a statement, managing partner Juan Martinez said the firm would continue to seek lateral hires.
"We are proud of the vital role that HWL Ebsworth plays within Australia's Insurance sector, however we refuse to be complacent. We are continuing to seek specialists to broaden our offering.
"The commercial area has been a key growth area for HWL Ebsworth in recent years, with a significant increase in activity in M&A, equity capital markets, funds management and superannuation. We will be looking to further enhance our offering in these areas to ensure that we can meet our clients' needs across Australia."
He added: "Expanding the firm's banking and financial services practice through the recruitment of leading practitioners across Australia has been a significant focus of ours over the last twelve months and this has been in response to ever increasing demand from our banking and borrower client base."
Following the recent appointments, HWL Ebsworth now has 173 partners nationally.
