PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has entered the Canadian legal market with the acquisition of Toronto-based immigration law firm Bomza Law Group.

The firm, which has been renamed PricewaterhouseCoopers Immigration Law LLP, has a total of 37 staff, including 12 lawyers, and more than 20 years of experience in Canadian, US and global immigration law.

It will be led by barrister and solicitor Janet Bomza, alongside senior immigration lawyers Mark Dey and Melodie Hughes.

Julia Onslow-Cole, who heads PwC's global immigration team from the UK, said the move would allow the auditor to provide clients with US and Canadian immigration services direct.

"Clients like this seamless approach, and it was one of the reasons behind our recent alternative business structure (ABS) licence," she commented. "Demand for business immigration services is increasing as countries tighten border controls while businesses need workers to be geographically mobile.

"Our wider reach will help us capitalise on this growing demand. We're in the unique position of being able to offer clients legal, expatriate tax, payroll, and mobility consulting advice."

In January, PwC Legal was awarded dual alternative business structure (ABS) licences by the Solicitors' Regulation Authority (SRA), potentially bringing PwC Legal's 2,000 lawyer network under the control of the auditing firm.

With offices in Toronto, Calgary and Montreal, Bomza represents corporate and individual clients on all immigration matters.

"This affiliation will strengthen our global reach and assist businesses with complex immigration requirements," said Bomza. "We are committed to providing clients with a seamless continuation of immigration services at the highest level of quality, personal attention and responsiveness that our clients have valued over the years."
