CMS has added a second Middle East office to its international network with the launch of a base in Oman yesterday.

The office adds to its presence in the region after it opened its first Middle Eastern base in Dubai in September 2012.

However, the new Muscat-based Oman office will not be populated by any partners. The only lawyers working directly from the office will be two consultants: Ben Ewing, formerly of Akin Gump; and Amur Al Rashdi, formerly from local firm Khalifa Al Hinai.

The pair will be supported by energy partner Matthew Culver, who runs the Dubai office, and energy, construction and projects practice group manager Stephen Millar, who is based in Aberdeen.

Like its counterpart in Dubai, the Oman office will focus on energy, projects and financial institutions work.

Millar commented: "The energy, projects and financial services sectors are growing in Oman and throughout the Middle East. They are strategically important areas for our clients and priority sectors for CMS. Our strategy is to be where our clients need us to be, and a presence in Oman complements our global offering."

Senior partner Penelope Warne added: "Energy law is a very significant part of our business and being on the ground in Oman means we can provide a better service for our clients."

CMS has been growing its international network rapidly in recent years through a combination of tie-ups and openings. Its most recent expansion saw it launch in Geneva through a merger with Swiss firm ZPG.

The network now numbers 57 offices worldwide.
