Secretarial jobs at Trowers & Hamlins are under threat as the firm plans to cut staff numbers across all of its UK offices.

An unknown number of jobs are at risk in Birmingham, London, Exeter and Manchester, as first revealed by RollOnFriday.

The firm has asked secretarial staff if they are willing to take voluntary redundancy. It is not clear how many were approached or will potentially be affected, but the firm employs around 100 non-lawyer staff across the offices. The firm has not yet launched a formal consultation but may do so in coming months.

A spokeswoman for Trowers said: "We have been undertaking a review of our UK secretarial services over the last few months with a view to restructuring them.

"No final plans have yet been confirmed, however, we felt it was appropriate at this stage to ask if any secretaries would be interested in voluntary redundancy. The terms on offer are enhanced over the statutory minimum."

Last May the firm made seven job cuts, with four fee-earners and three secretarial staff affected. The news comes as the firm is expanding its Birmingham office by moving two partners and a solicitor from London to the Midlands, increasing the number of solicitors in the office by 23%.

A string of law firms have confirmed redundancy rounds in recent months. Stephenson Harwood conducted a review that resulted in 27 secretarial job losses earlier this month, while DWF has launched a consultation that put 21 business services roles at risk.

Ince & Co last month confirmed a redundancy round that will affect up to 10 fee earners from the firm's insurance and shipping practices and six business services roles.
