JPMorgan Chase has hired Nomura's Piers le Marchant as its new EMEA general counsel (GC).

Le Marchant will replace Karen Linney in the role when he joins from the Japanese investment bank on 13 May. He will report to Stacey Friedman, GC of JPMorgan's corporate and investment bank division.

Le Marchant joined Nomura as an associate in 1988 and moved to now-defunct Lehman Brothers two years later, where he worked as European legal director. He rejoined Nomura in 2008 as European general counsel when it acquired Lehman's Asia and EMEA businesses.

Linney left JPMorgan earlier this year having been appointed as the bank's EMEA general counsel in 2008. She took on an expanded role in its corporate and investment bank arm four years later.

Linney first joined the bank in 1993 from Clifford Chance, where she was an associate.

JPMorgan's global legal team is led by firmwide GC Steve Cutler.

A spokesperson for Nomura confirmed that EMEA head of corporate legal Chris Barlow has replaced le Marchant.

Last December Nomura shook up its EMEA panel, which was managed by le Marchant, with Osborne Clarke added to the advisory roster while Clifford Chance missing out on a spot.
