Visa has revealed succession plans for its top legal role with the hire of PepsiCo senior vice president and deputy general counsel Kelly Tullier.

Tullier will join Visa as deputy general counsel and executive vice president on 16 June and will move into the general counsel role in October.

The lead lawyer spot is currently occupied by chief risk officer Ellen Richey, who was moved into the post of chief legal officer in December after the exit of general counsel Joshua Floum.

After Tullier becomes general counsel, Richey will become vice chairman for risk and public policy, responsible for chief audit executive and global crisis management at executive level.

At PepsiCo, Tullier managed the global legal teams supporting the businesses around the world, and teams responsible for M&A, IP, regulatory, litigation, environmental, and procurement work.

The one-time Baker Botts associate was previously GC for PepsiCo's Asia, Middle East & Africa operations, responsible for legal matters in over 70 countries.

"We are thrilled to have Kelly join the Visa team and to create the opportunity for Ellen to guide us through this critical time in the evolution of the payment system," said Visa CEO Charlie Scharf. "Kelly's extensive global and broad leadership experience will be a great complement to our outstanding legal team."

Scharf also praised Richey for taking oversight of the card payment giant's legal function, despite being more focused on risk management at the company since 2007.
