Pinsent Masons head of financial institutions and human capital Stephen Miles has departed to take up the role of heading up DWF's commercial services business.

In his role as DWF's commercial services CEO, Miles will be responsible for executing the firm's commercial services strategy and co-ordinating the firm's major commercial practice groups, which are corporate and banking, litigation and real estate.

Miles will oversee the offering alongside commercial services COO Natalie Griffin and work with commercial services practice group heads Nic Crocker, Graham Dagnall and Alasdair Peacock. He will report to DWF managing partner and CEO Andrew Leaitherland along with Paul Berry, CEO of the firm's insurance division.

Miles joined legacy Pinsent & Co in 1989 and was promoted as partner in 1997. He was named as Pinsents' banking and restructuring head ahead of the merger between Pinsents and Masons in 2004. His role expanded six years later to include leading the firm's employment and pensions offering.

He was put charge of financial institutions and human capital when Pinsents overhauled its practice and industry sector group focus to tie in with its merger with Scots firm McGrigors in 2012.

Pinsents has not yet appointed Miles' replacement. His departure date is not yet known.

During Miles' stint at Pinsents, he acted for financial institutions and corporates including the national acquisition and leveraged finance teams of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and HSBC.

Leaitherland said: "This role is critical to the future development of commercial services at DWF and Stephen's wealth of management experience, his strong leadership track record and his impressive understanding and insight into changing client needs will give us an exceptional platform for future growth."

A spokesperson for Pinsent Masons said: "Stephen has played a significant part in the transformation of our banking practice from that of a regional leader to a firmly established national heavyweight with growing international credentials, he will always be a friend of the firm and he leaves with our best wishes.

"Part of Stephen's legacy at the firm is a strong and deep pool of talent at senior level, and we will take soundings and confirm succession plans in due course."

DWF's commercial services arm accounts for roughly £100m of firmwide turnover, housing over 600 professionals including 194 partners. In 2012-13 the firm turned over £188m in total.
