Pinsent Masons has announced elections for the top two positions at the firm, starting with a contested run-off for senior partner.

Chris Mullen (pictured), who has held the post since 2005, is being challenged by Richard Foley, who is currently head of Pinsent's construction advisory and disputes group. The election process will take place throughout the month, with a final vote expected in early July.

The senior partner race will be followed by a vote for a new managing partner, although it is not yet clear if any partner will challenge 16-year incumbent David Ryan.

Mullen was reappointed for a second term in an uncontested elections in 2008, and led the negotiations during Pinsent's successful merger with McGrigors in 2012.

He held on to his position following the merger, which delayed an election originally due to take place in 2012.

Foley, who has significant international experience including a former role as head of Pinsent's Asia practice, conducted a review of opportunities for the firm across Africa last year.

This is the first Pinsents role to be contested since the election of managing partner Ryan in 1998.

No timescale has been given yet for the managing partner election, except that it will not take place until after the senior partner election has concluded.

All equity partners, including fixed share partners, will be eligible to vote, and candidates can begin hustings immediately.
